Five things to do in Belo Horizonte

Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Gerais and venue of the "7-1" during the 2014 World Cup, has many facets and is considered one of the best organized Brazilian cities. Here are five things you should do when staying during your Brazil trip.

1. Explore the center of Belo Horizonte on foot

If you are in the center of the city around the Mercado Central, explore everything on foot. Not only is it the most beautiful corner with many museums, here you can learn about the basic customs of the population. Lovers of cheese and sugar cane brandy should visit the booth number 34 from Ronaldo. He knows the characteristics of the national drink and is happy to recommend his favorite varieties. Also, the historical center around the Praca da Liberdade offers many interesting museums about the history of the state, immigration, and much more. Please note that museums are usually closed on Mondays.

2. Explore the area around the Lagoa da Pampulha (lagoon, lake)

There is a lot to discover here: a zoo, the "Mineirao" stadium, where the almost fateful soccer match between Germany and Brazil was played during the soccer world championship, various museums and of course the famous church São Francisco de Assis, which was designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer. It is also recommended to take a walk along the lake.

3. Travel by public transport

Admittedly, bus travel in Brazil is an adventure in itself, but it also has its advantages. The bus network in Belo Horizonte is very well developed, with buses running regularly during the day. You can explore all the interesting places of the city at low cost, experience Brazilian everyday life in the truest sense of the word, and save cab costs. You can also take the bus to visit Mangabeiras Park, which is located in the south of the city and from there you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the city.

4. Check out the cuisine, nightlife, and bars

Belo Horizonte is the city with the highest number of bars and pubs per inhabitant in the country. Traveling to the city and not experiencing Minas' cooking is like traveling to Rio without seeing the statue of Christ. There is something for every budget and the quality and range of food in the different restaurants is wide. Especially the districts Savassi and Lourdes offer a wide variety of food. Also, music lovers get their money's worth, as the many nightclubs offer all imaginable music styles from Samba, Funk to Dance, and Rock'n'Roll. By the way: Pão de Queijo, the famous cheese bread, has its origin in Minas Gerais.

5. Visit the Feira Hippie (hippie market) on Sunday morning

If you're in a good mood after an eventful night in the city's restaurants and bars on Sunday morning, you should pay a visit to the Feira Hippie on Avenida Afonso Pena. Here, merchants sell all kinds of handicrafts, clothes, and souvenirs at numerous small stalls. Also ideal to get to know the local cuisine a little better and to buy some souvenirs of your Brazil vacation.
After you have explored Belo Horizonte, we recommend you to visit the baroque towns of Ouro Preto and Mariana.
