Red Algae Production in Brazil
A Brazilian fishing community from Icapui in the state of Ceara, one of the most popular destinations on a trip to Brazil, has discovered a source of income and versatile applications with the cultivation of red algae in the northeast of Brazil. The red algae - similar to oysters - are cultivated directly in the sea and reach the optimal size for harvesting after only about three months. The institute "Fundacao Brasil Cidadao" promotes the cultivation of algae in Brazil and thus supports both nature conservation and the improvement of the basic income of the Brazilian community in Ceara, which lives mainly from fishing.
Algae are important for the food industry and are also processed by the inhabitants into shampoos and soaps. Part of the harvest is even used to make jelly and mousse, and the plant-like creatures are also used in the school canteen.
This project and the fishing culture should be explored during the next Brazil vacation and the oysters fresh from the sea should be enjoyed in the local community.
