Airplane at Sao Paulo airport in Brazil

Brazil's air traffic in brisk operation

To travel throughout the fifth largest country in the world, it will most likely be necessary for you to take a domestic flight during your vacation to Brazil. The country is well-positioned in terms of airport infrastructure, so nothing stands in the way of a comfortable trip by air.
Six of the Brazil's busiest airports are located in the southeast of the country, and two more in the northeast. Let's first take a look at the southeast of the country, which is home to one of the most populous cities in the world: São Paulo. This metropolis of millions acts not only as Brazil's financial and cultural center, but also as the country's transportation hub. São Paulo’s airports in particular have become an indispensable part of Brazil's transfer landscape.

Guarulhos and Congonhas: Taking off from São Paulo

Guarulhos Airport in São Paulo receives more travellers each year than any other airport in Brazil. For more than thirty years, the airport has been a hub for domestic and international flights. Guarulhos now sees nearly 38 million passengers a year, with over half traveling internationally.
Brazil's second busiest airport is also located in the industrial city of São Paulo and is called Congonhas. Actually, the word "Congonhas" is another name for a variety of mate tea commonly consumed in Brazil. These tealeaves are mainly found in the city of Congonhas do Campo, which is located in the state of Minas Gerais. This was the birthplace of the first head of government for the city of São Paulo, after the declaration of independence of Brazil in 1822. In memory of the count who reigned at that time, the airport was inaugurated in 1936 with the name "Congonhas".
At the time, the busy city of São Paulo was already equipped with an airport, but the need for another landing field arose due to regular flooding of the already existing airport. The Tietê River, which crosses the state of São Paulo, was responsible for the flooding of the airport, often causing air traffic to be suspended for months at a time, so plans were drawn up for the construction of an alternative airport. The region around Congonhas was decided for the location because of its flat ground and good visibility.

Brasília as a modern capital

The airport in the capital city of Brasília ranks third among the most visited airports in the country. Brasília's airport was founded in 1957, making it even older than the capital itself. In the beginning, the airport received just two planes a day, but today it handles about 50,000 passengers a day. Many are in transit, but just as many travelers land in Brasília to spend a few days in the capital.
Brasília was officially inaugurated in 1960, and Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer is responsible for its extraordinary urban planning. The capital is located in the heart of Brazil and is organized in the shape of an airplane. Visitors will especially notice the futuristic-looking buildings, which were mostly designed by Niemeyer.
