Brazil Travel Packages: Aracaju
Aracaju, capital of the northeastern state of Sergipe, is located at the mouth of the Sergipe River flowing into the Atlantic Ocean.
The name of the city comes from the term "Arakaiu" of the Tupi language, which means "Caju tree of the macaws." Caju is know outside of Brazil as a cashew nut.
Aracaju was founded in 1855 as a planned city and the streets were laid out geometrically according to a checkerboard pattern by the city engineer Sebastiao Jose Basilio Pirro.
Among Brazilians, Aracaju is known for its good quality of life and friendly people. The social gradient is lowest in the Northeast and there are fewer traffic jams here than in other Brazilian cities. This charming fact might also be because of the extended bicycle paths and the well utilized public transportation system. Among the other state capitals, Aracaju has one of the lowest rates for cost of living.
The city has experienced a real boom since the 1960s and the population doubled in a short time. Today, about 650,000 people sustain themselves here from local trade and, increasingly, from tourism. The region offers beautiful, endless beaches and dense mangrove forests.
