Brazil Travel Packages: Maceio
Maceio, capital of the Northeastern state of Alagoas, with just over 1 million inhabitants, is one of the largest cities in the region. The name of the city comes from the indigenous Tupi language and describes pictorially a lagoon at the mouth of a river that is cyclically covered by the ocean.
Long before the arrival of the Europeans, natives of the Caetes tribe had already populated the area. The Portuguese used the bay as a port for the sugar trade and officially founded the city in 1815 as a union of the port and the surrounding settlements.
Maceio is currently experiencing strong economic and infrastructural growth. It is the largest producer of rock salt in the country and various other industries are being developed. Furthermore, the region sustains itself from agriculture, cattle breeding and the extraction of natural gas and oil.
The annual festivities held in the city, the long palm-lined beaches and ideal swimming conditions attract many tourists. The climate of the region invites you for a beach getaway year round with an average temperature of 77 °F (25 °C) to 86 °F (30 °C) and 300 days of sunshine per year.
