Natal, with its 804,000 inhabitants and also known as the city of the dunes, is the capital of the Northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte. Besides numerous beaches, dunes and freshwater lagoons, it also has good tourist infrastructure. Visitors can look forward to almost 300 sunny days a year on their trip to Natal. Morro do Careca, measuring 400 feet (120 meters) in height, awaits you at Ponta Negra beach. On the city beach of Artistas there are rare coral reefs that invite you to snorkel. Also, a boat tour is recommended to explore the endless width of the sea. If you prefer to go ashore, a ride on a dromedary is recommended. The Epiphany fortress of Natal, the "Forte dos Reis Magos," is the main attraction of the city. You can also visit the cathedral, built in 1599, and many other historical buildings in baroque or neoclassical style. Local specialities can be found in the good restaurants and bars. In addition, the city center invites you to go shopping with many small shops and boutiques. In Natal, temperatures are warm to hot year round with an average of 68 °F (20 °C) to 88 °F (31 °C). October, November and December have the least rainfall and the maximum amount of sunlight. If you consider your trip between March and July, a little more rain is to be expected.
