Brazil Travel Packages: Nova Friburgo
Nova Friburgo is located about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of Rio de Janeiro and has a population of 182,000. The cooler mountain air of the Organ Mountains and the green landscapes create a perfect balance to the hot and vibrant mayhem of Rio. One of the most important sights is the city's renovated cable car, which transports about 120,000 people annually. Tres Picos National Park is located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Nova Friburgo and is worth a visit, especially because of its lush vegetation and impressive waterfalls. The Jardim do Nego, with its huge sculptures overgrown with moss, is also very worth seeing. The mountainous landscape of the Atlantic Rainforest in this region offers ideal conditions for hiking. In Brazil, Nova Friburgo is especially known for its textile industry. The town was once founded by Swiss immigrants, whose cultural influence is still noticeable. This is how the region has established itself in a culinary way. Homemade specialities such as cheese, jam, jellies and sweets are very popular. Despite influences from the mountains, Nova Friburgo’s climate remains tropical. In the summer months, from December to March, it can get up to 77 °F (25 °C). The dry winter months, from June to August, can sometimes be cold. The temperature will drop to an average low of 46 °F (8 °C) and in the higher regions there can even be snow.
