Brazil Travel Packages: Praia de Galinhos
During a trip to the sun-spoiled beaches of the Northeast, Praia de Galinhos, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, should not be missing on any travel itinerary. This small town with only a few thousand inhabitants is surrounded by endless white sandy beaches, dunes, mangroves and rivers.
The name of the region originally comes from a fish species that is widespread here, the Peixe-Galo. However, the species was drastically reduced in numbers, leading many fishermen to abandon their houses along the coast and form small villages. The livelihood of the community is centered around fishing Peixe-Galo and some species of flying fish, but also the production of salt in natural salt works along with cotton and sisal fibers.
Nowadays, Praia de Galinhos is being discovered by tourism and more and more travelers are coming to the region to enjoy the secluded beaches and pristine nature. Among the most popular activities are visits to the photogenic lighthouse at Praia do Farol or a swim at Praia do Capim, where an increased salt content in the water allows easier drifting.
