Brazil Travel Packages: Santarem

Santarem, in the state of Para, is the third largest city in the Amazon region with 284,000 inhabitants. It lies halfway between Manaus and Belem at the confluence of Rio Tapajos and Rio Amazonas. About an hour's flight separates it from its two big sisters. On the river route it is almost 623 miles (1,000 kilometers), which are regularly covered by freight ships. Santarem was a settlement area of indigenous peoples and an important military post in the colonial period. The artisanship of the indigenous tribes is exhibited in the Museu de Tapajos and is worth a visit. Just like in Manaus, you can also observe an "Encontro das Aguas" (meeting of the waters) in Santarem. For miles on end, the clear green water of the Rio Tapajos and the ochre brown water of the Amazon flow side by side before they mix. Another worthwhile destination on your trip to Brazil is the fishing village of Alter do Chao, 14 miles (23 kilometers) away. Its white sandbanks make for the most popular beaches in the dry season. There you can also admire the Amazon water lily "Vitória Régia," whose leaves reach a diameter of 6.5 feet (2 meters) and can carry a child. Santarem has hot temperatures year round, ranging from 72 °F (22 °C) to 91 °F (33 °C). The months of October and November are particularly attractive for sun worshippers with the highest temperatures, lots of sunshine and little rainfall. Most precipitation is between January and June.
