Sao Luis is the capital of the Northern state of Maranhao and has about 1.3 million inhabitants. Also known as the City of Tiles, the city is located on the eastern part of the island bearing the same name, in the bay of Sao Marcos. Since 1997, the city center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In terms of tourism, Sao Luis serves mainly as an entrance gate to the dune landscape of the Lencois Maranhenses. However, the city itself also offers various tourist attractions. Characteristic of the cityscape are the beautiful Portuguese tiles in the historic center of Praia Grande. Start your sightseeing tour at Casa do Maranhao, an information and exhibition center, where you will get to know the culture and folklore of Brazil. For lovers of art and culture, the Art and History Museum, with its 7,000 exhibits, is an additional point of interest. Many small shops and boutiques also offer regional artisanship. When visiting the city beaches, the strong tides must be taken into account. At high tide, the water can rise up to the stairs of the beaches. In Sao Luis you can expect warm to hot temperatures year round. The average temperature range is between 73 °F (23 °C) to 90 °F (32 °C). The least amount of precipitation occurs from the middle to the end of the year, while the rainiest months are from January to April.
