Brazil Travel Packages: Tiradentes

The historic baroque-style city of Tiradentes is one of the most beautiful cities in Brazil and lives up to this reputation with its colonial churches, buildings, monuments and streets. The city is located in the mountainous hinterland of the state of Minas Gerais and can be reached by car or bus from Rio de Janeiro in about 5 hours. Today, Tiradentes has about 7,000 inhabitants, who sustain themselves mainly from tourism, but many artists have also settled here. Tiradentes was named after a Brazilian freedom fighter in the 18th century who fought against the colonial powers in a group known as “Inconfidencia Mineira” and became the national hero of the country. He was born not far from the city of Sao Joao del Rei, only 9 miles (15 kilometers) from Tiradentes. The city was founded as early as 1718, but was only renamed Tiradentes after the hero's death and with the proclamation of the Republic in 1889. One of the most famous sights is the Maria Fumaca (Smoking Maria), a steam locomotive that runs on the historic route between Sao Joao del Rei and Tiradentes. The artistic street scene, with the baroque churches in rococo style, makes Tiradentes a destination for many culture enthusiasts. The memorable buildings can best be visited on foot during a walk on the old cobblestone pavement. Nature lovers also get their money's worth, as the city is surrounded by dense rainforest and mountains.
