Visit the historical highlights of Ouro Preto on a private daytrip. The tour leads through the historic center of Ouro Preto and Mariana, both towns were former capitals of Minas Gerais during colonial times. To this day, the two cities impress with their colonial charm as well as numerous historical buildings, baroque churches and gold mines. Ouro Preto has been a World Heritage Site since 1980.
Itinerary
After breakfast, your guide will pick you up at your hotel and guides you through the old part of Ouro Preto, where we get to know all the important historical sights in the surrounding area. Mariana is only 20 km away and we recommend to use the panoramic train to get there during the weekends. In the 19th century, a steam train took passengers all the way down to Rio de Janeiro. In the morning we visit the church Igreja do Pilar, the small opera house (the oldest still in use in Latin America) and the Museum of coins “Casa da Moeda”, where a fifth of every gold had to be given to the Portuguese Crown during colonial times. The city experienced a gold rush in the 18th century, and many buildings still testify these years of global importance. At lunchtime, we can experience typical food from Minas Gerais in a local restaurant. The large stone pots stand here on the open fire and the menu offers something for all tastes. In the afternoon we discover the disused gold mine “Mina da Passagem”, this place is the largest goldmine open for visitation of the world. Then our tour leads us to Mariana. The cathedral of Mariana “Catedral da Sé” is particularly interesting, it houses an old Arp Schnitger Organ from Germany painted with Chinese symbols. The organ was imported to Brazil from Hamburg during the golden years in the 18th century, until today weekly concerts take place on Friday and Sunday at lunchtime. After finishing out tour in Mariana, we will return to your hotel.
